I hear a lot of music. I have opened up my email to all kinds of music from all kinds of artists. I listen with an open mind, and make my own decision on how Indie Artists can improve. One of the most common issues I have heard is not having the right people Featuring on the song.
When I started recording back in 9th grade, I would have anyone come on the song who could rap. It didn’t matter to me at the time if you were good or not. We would right a song, record it…and thought it sounded great! But looking back, certain people I had on songs shouldn’t have been on the track, let alone rapping.
Why is this important to you? Because you get about 30 seconds to catch peoples attention. Once you get their attention, do you really want some garbage ass rapper turning them away? I have talked with some artists who have clearly said they want people who are not better than them so they can shine on the track. That’s not the way to go because I will turn the song off, and most people probably would too. Have you ever heard s verse so bad, it messed up the entire song? That’s what happens in this situation. You don’t get taken serious…
Try and get people to Feature on tracks who are on the same level as you are. Not only will you compliment each other, but the song will flow smoothly. If you look at big name artists, pay attention to who Features on tracks. A lot of it is politics; artists want people who are hot at the moment to drop hooks are a 16. But if you look at the rest of the album, not the single, you will probably see something different.
I would say with confidence that you should not have your homie jump on a track because he feels like rapping. And if you are taking your craft serious, probably stay away from people who are not continuing to grow. Just remember, rapping drunk at a party is completely different from actually getting behind a mic.
