Going Indie: When should you use Soundclick?

When to use Soundclick

When you are getting ready to write a new song and have a pretty good idea of what kind of beat you are looking for, where do you go?

My guess is that most of us head on over to Soundclick.

So, what is Soundclick?

Soundclick is a free music community featuring signed and unsigned artists. They were established in 1997 and offer free profile pages, mp3 downloads, audio and video streaming, and much more. It has over 3 million members and has become a haven for aspiring hip-hop artists to find beats, most of which are free to use.

The one thing I do like about Soundclick is how they organize their material. If you are looking for just Beats/Instrumentals, there is a section for that. Furthermore, once you enter that section the beats can be broken down even more by genres. You can select from Club Bangas to an East Coast Style. They also have a pretty simple and easy to use preview button to hear the track. If you like it you can continue to download, if not, keep it moving.

I have browsed through Soundclick hundreds of times just listening to beats, and seeing what new sounds and styles are becoming popular. And for hip-hop artists there is an abundance of beats for you to choose from.

But how good is Soundclick for finding that perfect beat for you new banger>? Some good, some bad…

The good news is that a lot of beatmakers offer the choice to lease or buy the track. If you buy the track, that gives you a pretty good indication that 163 other people aren’t rapping to the same beat. While you may have to pay between $200-1000 for the beat, it might be worth that piece of mind in case your song really starts to take off.

The bad news is that most of us don’t want to pay for beats. There are just as many good free beats as there are paid ones. These beats come with the producers tags in them but who really cares? Also, its been downloaded 291 times, but that’s no biggie either right?

Well, if its just a mixtape song then yes! I don’t see a problem with 291 variations. But what about pushing that song as a potential single? You may want that track played on the radio or club. But how far can you really take that song when you have no deal with the producer and it’s being downloaded everyday by more and more people?

Soundclick is awesome, but not for potential lead songs. You have original lyrics right? Well your beat should be too. Work with producers to get that exclusive, original hit. Soundclick for mixtapes is perfectly fine, but I once heard 3 songs with the same beat, and all 3 artists were pushing the song like a single.

How can that work?
