Jay Freeze “bounces back” with Vol. 2, and a new talent shines

Last week I got a call from OvaTyme, and he said he wanted to drop off the new mixtape from Jay Freeze, and could I review it for the site…I’m like cool, drop it off and I will listen to it between my weekly trips to Pensacola.

So I’ve been listening to it, and it sounds really good. Whoever did the recording and mixing did a really good job. Some of the tracks that get submitted sound so terrible that I can’t even put ‘em up on the site.

Overall, there are 14 tracks, which is a good number for a mixtape. And there are a few stand out songs.

The NUMBER ONE stand out song is “Loud”. The hook and beat makes the song entirely. If I had just those two things on a CD I would be good. The verses are nice, but they don’t seem to match up to the hook. I had a few people check the song out too, and here is what they came up with: Re-do the verses, and you have yourself a potential single to work with!

Reasons? There are parts in the verses that sound like other rappers’ style. The big thing that got noticed was some of the lines were used in other rappers’ songs.

A quick note to all: As an Independent rapper you have more to prove as far as your lyrics and style. People want to hear what you can do on the mic, not do something that has already been done. It will get noticed immediately and you could potentially lose credibility as a rapper.

I think that song as major potential, and would definitely set the club scene on fire! Maybe re-work a couple parts and flood the streets with it.

The other song that stood out to me was number 2, i believe it’s called “Money on my mind”. It’s one of those songs that has to be on a mixtape/album. We all have money on our mind, and this song mixes street hustle with a music grind. Not a bad way to start off the mixtape…

Sometimes guest appearances get overlooked because people are focused on the Main  artist, but Lil Wade completely stood out. On the track titled “Strictly Bout My Cash” there are only two verses, and Lil Wade brings it home on the second.

So when I say lock and load, you n*ggas better hit the flo, I reach down and cock the hoe…”

His style reminds me of the Old Hot Boyz, like Turk. It’s in a raw form, and with the right guidance, he could make a lot of people mad. He is featured on a couple more tracks, and I look forward to hearing more from him.

Lil Wade, holla at us!

I never had the chance to meet Jay Freeze when him and his squad used to come through Barleys, but I do like the sound they are making.
