Jamie Drastik:The Magnet (Mixtape Review)

I came across this mixtape on one of the major hip hop sites, I expected it to be trash as so many mixtapes are today, but surprisingly it ended up being a good listen. The Magnet, hosted by Pitbull, was a different style mixtape. The vibe I got from the music was that Jamie was very comfortable in his own skin; he tried a mixture of outside the box ideas which in the end helped make the project even better.

One of my favorites is a track called “Gimmick” where he pretty much breaks down the whole hip hop music industry in three minutes. Jamie addresses in the track the things an average up and coming artist does to get signed, for example,  fake plays on myspace or fake follwers on twitter . The track is relevant because we personally know people with 500 thousands plays, yet they know damn well they got only 2 fans if that. Its funny watching these artists act like their the hottest thing on streets, but as Ed lover would say, “C’mon son”!

One of my other favorite tracks is called ” Jumper” where he takes a non traditional hip hop beat and turns it into something fire. He takes the concepts from the original song and decides to write a letter to a friend addressing their  two addictions, one being fame and one being cocaine.

After listening to Magnet it reinforces the old saying you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. I googled Jamie Drastik just see if  I’ve seen him around in a video or whatever, nope. You could’ve walked past this guy 100 times in the subway and a person would have no clue he spits. He doesn’t look like the typical rapper but his flow is nice and he can spit, so you got to respect it.
