One of the most important things you will do as an artist involves building your fan-base. But you will never really be done building, because you are always trying to gain new fans, right?
Aside from using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to communicate with fans, you should be building an email list too.
Believe it or not, but email is still very powerful.
There are a few websites out there that can help artists manage their email lists really well. Reverbnation has a really nice one, but it costs to use.
So how can you use basic email and make it work for you?
It’s pretty simple: Learn how to correctly send emails. As a matter of fact, I am writing this article because a certain rapper has no idea what he is doing. Let me explain…
He has a long list of people who he sends his new music out to. I know this because he adds every contact to the “To:” section of the email. So when I receive the email, I now know exactly who he is sending the music to.
Not only is this a very unprofessional way of sending out emails, but it opens up the chance for unsolicited emails.
Example:
Last week I began getting a bunch of emails from a particular blog site. I had never heard of the site, nor did I know how they got my email address. The next day I received an email from our “unprofessional rapper”, and saw the blog site in the “To:” area. So what this blog site did was add every person the rapper sent the email to to a list. Now I am being spammed.
The correct way
If you are not going to use a Newsletter system like Reverbnation, here is what you do:
In the “To:” area, add your email address or create a new email address. If you are creating a new email address, it might be a good idea to give it a name that has to do with Promotion or Street Team.

Next, add all your contacts in the “Bcc” area. “Bcc” stands for Blind Carbon Copy and Wikipedia has put together a nice definition for us:
Bcc refers to the practice of sending a message to multiple recipients in such a way that conceals individual email addresses (mentioned in “to” field of the mail) from the complete list of recipients.

Now when you send out the email it will only show your email address. I can tell you that your fans will really appreciate it because our email address is like our Social Security Number….we don’t want everyone to have it.
What About Submitting Music To DJs and Blog Sites?
While sending a more personalized email with your music is always a preferred method, this also applies to sending out emails to DJs and Blog Sites. You are still building and managing a relationship so the more professional you seem, the better your chances of getting Featured.
No DJ or Blog site wants to see that they are on some random list (even though we know we are).
Conclusion
I can’t stress enough how important understanding this basic technique is. If you have been sending out emails the wrong way it’s not too late. Please get familiar with proper email etiquette. You will thank me later!

Lol, I dig this story! There is nothing worse than having your email address exposed to everyone and their mother.
‘Preciate it. Yea, I think I might expose the website that is adding all the email address. Lol
Nice article! I’m in need of some good blogs to actually email though, and google isn’t really helping me as much as I’d like.
Is it fine to do a little publicity on here?
