I’ve been on this Myspace obsession the past few days. From the new profile design to digital distribution deals, Myspace has caught my attention again.
While browsing through the Myspace Music Charts, I noticed something that I haven’t seen before: Indie and Unsigned Charts.
That’s right, Myspace Music has a Top 10 music chart for Indie Hip Hop artists, and Unsigned Hip Hop artists. (They, of course, do it for the Majors as well.)
Aside from all the genres of music that you can choose from, the charts are broken up into 4 sections:
- Artists
- Songs
- Albums
- Videos
In each of these categories there is the option to search based on Indie, Unsigned, or Major. You can also do an “overall” search.
I reached out to Lindsay at Myspace Music about how the charts were calculated. While she couldn’t give me much detail about the process (understandably), she did tell me that:
“it’s a special formula that combines a lot of your stats – play counts, friends, profile views, activity, etc”.
For Hip Hop Heads…
This could be a good way to discover new music that would otherwise get overlooked. Mike Real and I have already reached out to some of the artists on the list. It gives us an idea of who is really working hard, and can give you new music.
For Hip Hop Artists…
This could be what you need for extra motivation, or to check out the competition. Even if the Myspace charts are not important to you, being on any chart is dope! I’m sure we are not the only site searching through Top 10 lists.
