IDLabs On Working With Mac Miller x “Knock Knock”

Last night we dropped the new Mac Miller video for “Knock Knock” on the site.

Within the last 24 hours he as over 34,000 plays on Youtube, which include over 1,000 Likes (and only 20 dislikes…Haters!)

Mac’s fans have been showing a tremendous amount of love to the rapper, which is evident by the #knockknock and #mostdope tags that are being updated every minute.

With all the hype surrounding the “Knock Knock” release, I thought it would be dope to reach out to the production team over at ID Labs, who was responsible for the beat and helped put the song together.

ID Labs is based out of Lawrenceville, PA, less than a mile outside of downtown Pittsburgh. They provide high quality recording, production, sound design, mixing, and mastering for artists, musicians, businesses, individuals, and groups. They have also become known as “ground zero” for urban based music production and engineering in and around southwestern PA.

Some clients they have worked with in the past include:

  • Wiz Khalifa
  • Bun B
  • Pittsburgh Slim
  • Johnny Juliano
  • Gucci Mane
  • Warner Bros. Records
  • Rostrum Records

E. Dan, the owner of ID Labs, said they “have been working with Mac for a few years now and we’re beyond excited to see everything thats happening for him recently.” He went on to say that,  ‘He’s a multi-talented kid, has a ridiculous work ethic and above all is a great dude.

I always like hearing about the different creative processes each artist and production team have so I asked E. Dan about their relationship with Mac, and what goes on in the studio. He said, Mac, Big Jerm (2nd in command at ID and production partner), and himself have weekly ‘band practice’ with Mac, where they  all sit around and work on songs together with Mac joining in on the beat making process and writing to whatever they come up with.

He went on to say, “Its been a fun way to work for all of us and we feel like it’s led to more creative songs than the usual process of producer-makes-beat-then-hands-it-off-to-artist-to-rap-over.”

We went on to talk about how the “Knock Knock” song came about.

Benjy Grinberg (president/founder of Rostrum Records) sent E. Dan the Linda Scott song ‘Ive Told Every Little Star’ as an idea to sample. He and Mac put the whole song together in under a couple hours. The ID Labs owner then proceeded to tweek the track for the next day or two.

At the end of everything, he said “It came out great and Rex Arrow did an awesome job on the video.”

I think it’s dope that Mac is active in the entire process of a song. I think that’s what it takes to get your music to the next level, and it certainly adds more of a unique flavor to your sound.

Hi there, I came to know this knock knock brilliant video.
It took 4 months to reach my remote village south of France !

I’ve been looking for the very first sample used on the video clip, that fifties sound we hear before Linda Scott sample starts.
Can you help the frog ? Thanks !
