Hip Hop/Alternative Band Floco Torres

Aside from my love for Southern Rap, I also have a love for creative, new hip hop. I like new sounds and new flows. I like when artists of different rap genres collab, and I like artists who continue to push the limits.

Floco Torres is a Hip-Hop/Alternative band out of Macon, GA. The band consists of all the elements you would see in a typical rock band: Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and DJ.

Floco Torres is the nickname of the vocalist/rapper, who got his name from a childhood friends grandmother who noticed how “skinny” he was growing up. When she passed away he decided to take her last name “Torres” and create a brand that would influence people to inquire before they judge (Black Man-Spanish Name). That can be taken further to say “Rock Band The Does Rap Music”.

When I spoke with Floco Torres this morning I asked him what the process was like when creating a song from scratch. I imagined the process was a bit different from the rappers who download off of Soundclick.

Floco responded with, “My process is usually from an acapella verse I’ll write or just getting in the studio with instruments and noodling around until I get the feel I want. Then I bring my band in and the make the idea work. I’m all about energy with my music & I never try to force it. The only thing I think is different is if I don’t feel it, I won’t do it. I’m not on anyone’s time line but mine you know? Quality over quantity and all that good stuff.”

Quality over quantity is right. I would much rather hear 1 really good song, than 10 sloppy ones.

While we were on the topic of Soundclick, Floco had this interesting piece of info about the site:

“You know what’s funny about Soundclick, I had NO IDEA what it was until 2 weeks ago. I got a feature request from a local artist and he sent me the link to the beat, which was on Sounclick. Every showcase I’ve ever been to, there’s one judge always bashing rappers for using the same beats from this site.”

The video below is of the band performing their single “The Feeling” off their album MODERN LIFE, slated to drop this Spring.
